A dip in the holy waters of Varkala beach is assumed to cleanse the body and the spirit of all the sins hence the name 'Papanashini' for this coast.
Varkala town is a little away from the beach. In addition to the main beach, there are numerous smaller beaches further north with black volcanic sand.
